SciFi and Fantasy Art: Teleport CardThese cards were frequently used in the old days, seeing movement by foot, horse or cart was the only other transportation available. The card shown here is the only one left, and a crumpled one it is as well. The magic that used to inhabit the card has left it completely, and the runes once glowing with magic have gone out. In days long past, magicians from courts all over the continent would use the cards to teleport from one place to the other, the magician between flatter and thinner, the card become thicker and tangible until both were in the same plane of existence and none were there. At that moment the wizard was transported to the image depicted on the card. | |
 | | | | | Date | Name | Comment | | | 7 Feb 2004 | Blaise | *does a really stupid 1st comment dance* i would like to sa all these computer style piccys are rather good and its odd but unique that u decided to put those sort of pictures up as they arnt really drawings Hans Wichman replies: "uhm... thanks, I think ;-). But why do you not consider them as drawings? Since I really drew them all, however I drew them using photoshop, and 3dmax. " | |
| 9 Feb 2004 | Choffman | I found this picture farily intriguing (and it therefore was the first image I went to look at in your gallery.) The description intrigues me even more. I liek the fact that you've made it a little bent and added a simply backdrop to make the card feel three dimesional. The border pattern, while subtle, is really very nice. Hans Wichman replies: "thanks, I really like to write as well, but do not have to time (I like drawing even better ;-)) to write long stories, but writing a few lines for the images is always nice. The border pattern (in fact the whole map) was made in photoshop using gradients and masks and stuff, the image was rendered in MAX." | |
| 16 Feb 2004 | Astri Snodgrass | I really love the blue shades on the card, it's really nice. The texture is great, it looks so 3-D! Very nicely done. And to the first commenter, I don't see how this is not a real drawing. He did draw this, even if it was on the computer. It still requires skill and a steady hand. Hans Wichman replies: "that's what I like to hear !! Thank you (though after reading your other comment, I can't help thinking I can improve on the lighting here as well ;-))." | |
| 23 Feb 2004 | Laura Lee Paxson | Have you ever read "Nine Princes in Amber"? The characters in that book traveled using decks of cards just like that. I love the concept. Hans Wichman replies: "One of the best books ever! I was sad for days after reading Roger Zalazny died soon after completing the last book. I've got this really big edition with all 10 parts in it, brilliant! " | |
| 28 Feb 2004 | Aaron Weaver | Looks great, like the story. I was going to mention the Amber Trumps too. Hans Wichman replies: "Thanks and... totally right as well (with respect to the mention of trumps!), never said I came up with the idea myself ;-)" | |
| 3 Mar 2004 | Kristen Freund | wow...so I finally found the time to actually *look* around your gallery, and the first one I lok at amazes me! I love your abilities with computer programs. I actually thought it was a photo of a real card you drew, but I eventually discovered the whole thing was done on the computer! Wow! It completely fooled me, its so lifelike! its late and I have school in the morning...stupid college...anyways, I thought you might like to know that I updated my gallery, I added 5 more drawings, they're up now. PS, I love this card! Hans Wichman replies: "Hey Kristen! Nice you stepped by in my little gallery and thanx for the nice comment. College may suck but I have to go to work (for the next 35 years or so)... ;-) anywayz I desecrated your gallery once more with one of my inappropriate comments ;-), great update! I'll be checking back once in a while!" | |
| 17 Mar 2004 | Mary E Grey (meg) | hi there, you are becoming one of my more favorite artists here in the woods, i love your description of this peice. The colors really capture your attention in the thumbnails. I like the fact you cant really see the illustration on the card it makes your eyes all funnny and then you see things that are not really there. BEAUTIFUL Hans Wichman replies: "Thanks " | |
